India Hicks

India Hicks is a designer, author, entrepreneur, and a mother of five, who has spent most of her adult life in the Bahamas. She is the daughter of the designer David Hicks and Lady Pamela Hicks, which is to say she grew up inside one of the most exacting design educations in Britain and then went and built a life somewhere barefoot.

She has been writing about that collision for years — in An Entertaining Story and A Slice of England, and now in this one. Her rooms and her tables carry both halves of it: her father’s discipline about color and proportion, and the island conviction that a gathering is not a performance. She sits on the executive board of Global Empowerment Mission and is a patron of The King’s Trust.

Entertaining, with a Side of Chaos is her second entertaining volume, published by Rizzoli in September, and its argument is a generous one: hosting is not about perfection, it is about welcoming people in — even if you did not iron the tablecloth. We are putting that to the test in two shops and two dining rooms, six weeks after the book comes out.

A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE

Not a stop on an itinerary.

While India will be one of the highlights of our upcoming Paris experience, these stateside Escapes offer an entirely different and more immersive way to spend time with her.

Rather than one moment within a larger literary itinerary, each afternoon and evening will be devoted entirely to India’s world of design, entertaining and gracious living. Guests will explore those ideas through a private, locally curated design experience, an intimate after-hours salon at Hudson Grace, personal conversation and shopping, a professionally photographed individual portrait with India, and dinner with her as our guest of honor.

This is a rare opportunity to learn directly from India and experience firsthand the style, stories and wonderfully imperfect philosophy behind her new book, India Hicks: Entertaining, with a Side of Chaos.

This October, EDGE Escapes invites a very limited number of members to join author, designer and legendary hostess India Hicks for an extraordinary private afternoon and evening in San Francisco or Greenwich.

The experience will begin with an intimate, locally curated design experience created exclusively for EDGE Escapes guests. The setting and complete details will be revealed privately to registered guests.

From there, we will continue to Hudson Grace for private after-hours access to the store and an intimate entertaining salon with India. Over cocktails and passed hors d’oeuvres, India will share the stories, traditions and wonderfully imperfect philosophy behind her approach to welcoming people into one’s home.

Guests will enjoy a signed copy of India’s book, personal shopping with a Hudson Grace design specialist who will help translate India’s principles to your own rooms and table, and a professionally photographed individual portrait with India.

The evening will culminate in an intimate dinner with India as our guest of honor. With only ten places available in each city, this is designed to feel personal, gracious and entirely unlike a traditional book signing or public appearance.

2.00 PM - A private design experience

The day opens with a locally curated afternoon devoted to art, interiors and collecting, arranged for our small group alone. Each city has its own version, and each is an insider’s route into the design culture that gives Presidio Heights and Greenwich Avenue their character.

4.00 - 6.00 PM - An after-hours salon and cocktails at Hudson Grace

The doors close to the public and the store becomes ours. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, and personal shopping with a Hudson Grace design specialist, applying India’s principles to your own rooms and table. Then India herself: drawing on her new book, she will talk through how a beautiful room comes together, how a table earns its memory, and how the best evenings are allowed to go a little sideways — the wonderfully imperfect side of chaos that makes them unforgettable.

Every guest leaves with a signed copy of India Hicks: Entertaining, with a Side of Chaos and a professionally photographed individual portrait taken with India.

6.00 PM - An intimate dinner with India

We move on to dinner in a setting chosen to reflect the character of each destination — one table, one seating, no head of the room. India joins us as our guest of honor for an unhurried evening of wonderful food, lively conversation and the kind of access that only happens at this scale.

9.30 PM - Evening concludes

The complete itinerary, private design location, dinner venue and transportation details will be shared directly with registered guests. Schedule is subject to minor adjustments.

HUDSON GRACE

Two shops, closed for the night

Hudson Grace, the celebrated home and entertaining destination known for timeless tableware, sophisticated essentials and an effortlessly beautiful approach to hosting. Founded in San Francisco in 2012 by Monelle Totah and Gary McNatton.

Each evening moves here after the store closes to everyone else. Doors locked, champagne poured, and a Hudson Grace design specialist walking the floor with you — the new lines, what belongs on your table, and how India’s principles translate to your own rooms. Then India sets a table on the shop floor.
